Selection Sunday

Every year, I company I work for does an Employee Art Show. Open to the employees and their families, various piece of art – photography, painting, crafts – is submitted and is displayed in the main areas of corporate headquarters.

The pieces in the various divisions are reviewed by a panel of judges and winners are announced in each category.

I’ve been submitting two prints photography the last four years, with, thankfully, better results each time. Last year, in fact, my prints took first and third prizes.

The deadline to pick this year’s prints is here, and after consulting with some friends, I think I finally made my decision.

I said in an earlier post how I like the water shot of the children in Asbury Park. I like the emotions it evokes.

I also decided on the image from Kitui, Africa, that I shot last January, of the school children on the soccer pitch. The combination of the composition, sky, clouds, people and dirt make this an image I really like. In fact, I have a large framed print (16×20) of this hanging in my office. Thinking I’ll just take this print off my wall and submit it.

It’s always a tough selection for me. I have to consider where the pieces will hang (main walkway in HQ), and who will be judging the art. So, even though I’d love to submit some of my noir images, they just aren’t the right ones for this venue.

Same with my street photography. I really like some of those, but out of context, I don’t think it works for this type of submission.

And I just don’t feel that my landscape photography – urban or otherwise – is dynamic enough.

So, I look for those images I shot with people in them, and those that evoke a certain emotion or feeling.

I hope to continue my good showings this year. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
