Urban Landscapes
Thanks for the nice comments about the photo in yesterday’s post. I was just really happy to get it – I saw the way the sun was coming up through the clouds as I was driving and I was just hoping to get the appropriate backdrop for that explosion of color.
Anyway, it dawned on me at some point today that I’ve posted alot of landscape and nature images. I guess I do have a bit of those. But I also am developing an “Urban Landscape” portfolio as well. There’s nothing like having the hum of the city as your backdrop as you try to find something cool to shoot.
Many of my urban landscapes seem to come out almost as photojournalistic images. Often I’m just catching passing scenes and people that intrigue me. The image above was shot last February on a brutally Saturday morning while I was in Brighton Beach, NYC. I shot it in color but thought the B&W worked better.
Another B&W image shot in Greenwich Village, with some vignetting and grain thrown in.
Shot near 42nd Street in Midtown. I remember I has just purchased my 50mm and was testing it out. This image got a lot of nice reception over at Flickr.
Same night as the above, same 50.
So, Gotham has often been good to me. Then again, it’s hard to NOT find something cool to shoot in New York. I’ll post more of my Urban Landscapes (I’ve included some from NJ and other cities as well) so stay tuned!

These are great Mark
I really look forward to the urban landscapes as they are so different from where I live. There is always something special about them like a story partially told, or a lesson about life that is implied. Something mysterious about the city that I just don’t get to see in the country.
Great. The train station photo is uber’crisp. Is that the nifty-fifty? Nice post on the black and white. Nice Leica look to it. Also, digging the new blog design.
