All Creatures Great And Small

April 2nd was my little girl’s 2nd birthday. And we decided to celebrate it by heading to the Philadelphia Zoo.

Now, at one point, I lived in Philly for the better part of 10 years. Never in all that time did I go to the zoo. In fact, I probably haven’t been to the Philly Zoo – the First Zoo in America, mind you – since, oh, maybe 1975. I was thinking a lot had changed.

It had and it hadn’t. Of coure, the Philly Zoo is all spruced up now to accomodate all the visitors. It’s a bit more polished now than that scene in Rocky where he and Adrian are walking by the tiger exhibit while the snow if falling and he proposes.

[Wait…what??? You don’t remember that scene???…..*sigh*…]

Anyway, we had a great time. Not sure who liked the field trip more. My little one…or me. Between the little one opening birthday gifts and the zoo…I shot over 300 frames on April 2.

Some, like the gibbon hanging above, I actually like. Here are a few others…

Our symbol of strength and unity…

The bird was in a cage with fine mesh but I was able to focus to clear out the fence wire.

The King…

Same thing. The King was shot through a fence, which can slightly see, But I like the image nonetheless.

And, finally, the one that quickly has become my favorite. Can’t wait to see this as a print. A right beautiful bird.

See her Larger.

All of these images were shot with a Canon 75-300mm f1:4-5.6. I picked this up in San Francisco about six years ago for around $345. It’s not an L-series lens, but I’m constantly impressed at the image sharpness, color and clarity that it gives me. I had my EFS 17-85mm lens with me as well, but I don’t think I put it on but once. And most of the time I used manual focus. That’s the one drawback to the lens..the autofocus is alittle slow.

All in all, a good Day was had by everyone. Hope to get back there to shoot it, and the surrounding neighborhood, soon!

Oh, and I almost forgot…I finally got what I started out last weekend trying to get. I can cross the elusive robin off my list…

  1. The thing I really like about the Flamingo shot is the way you controlled the exposure. Wonderful. My wife and I made trips to the Phoenix Zoo last year and it’s a great place to shoot all sorts of animals, even the human kind. I haven’t been to the Philly Zoo in a while, but what I remember of it makes me want to go again. Speaking of Philly photographic locations, have you done any street work on South Street? My last question is what lens did you use for the Flamingo? Gosh, that image is lovely.
