In a very unexpected, but very appreciated, twist, me and some of Football Food For Fans photography was featured over at the very-cool Unbreaded website.

As they say in their “About” statement: Unbreaded is passionate about exploring the craft of fine sandwiches. We will feature reviews, news, interviews and recipes, exclusively devoted to sandwiches. Unbreaded was founded in 2009 by Ben Kessler and Jeff Vogel in Philadelphia.

Now, there is one thing Philly guys knows and that’s sandwiches. Be it cheese steaks from Pat’s or Geno’s, breaded chicken cutlets with broccoli rabe sandwiches from Tony Lukes, chicken cheesesteaks from Iskabibbles on South Street, or roast beef sandwiches from Nick’s Roast Beef, Philly is a sandwich town.

For nearly 10 years after college, I lived in a red brick row house, deep in the heart of South Philly. Just around the corner from Pat’s and Geno’s. I could smell the onions cooking when I left the house in the morning.

To me, what gets put between the bread, the bun or the roll can be a work of art. So to be featured on a site like Unbreaded, well, I was pretty stoked.

I’ve been cooking, and shooting, Football Food for Fans for three seasons now. Believe me, it gets challenging a) to come up with something new to make per the team the Philadelphia Eagles are playing and b) to get a good shot of it. Food photography is MUCH harder than it looks and I give those who specialize in it all the credit. Night games kill me because I lose all the good light. Even late afternoon games are challenging.

That being said, when the Eagles played the San Diego Chargers this past Sunday, and I knew the direction I had to go: SoCal tasty. But what did that entail, exactly? Well…I defered to WWJSE – What Would Jeff Spicolli, a la Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Eat:

Something fresh and tasty: I made some grilled shrimp tacos with tomatillo salsa and lime-cilantro mayo cole slaw for crunch. Even added in some homemade guacamole later on. Not only did they taste really good, I was able to shoot some of my favorite food images.

Now, this is not really up the Unbreaded pike. But I already know what I’ll be making this Sunday when the Eagles head to Soldier Field in Chicago to meet the Bears. This is one sandwich you won’t want to miss..just bring your own ECG machine. This won’t be for the faint of heart.

But it will be tasty…
