Goin’ With The Flo….

*Sigh*

I was thinking all day about what to do a blog post on tonight. My mind is still reeling as I continually go through my Nicaragua images from last week. In a way, I’m still there. I want to see the brilliant primary colors. I want to shake hands with the locals. I want to sip a Toña beer.

Alas, not to be. Here in NJ, today dawned cold and bright. Rather than walking the marketplace of Jinotepe, I was secured in conference room meeting after meeting.

C’est la vie

Then I thought I do a post on the quiet side of the trip. The special moments that I spent with our subjects. Like Grandma who was so happy to have us there. In between photo shoots, she was cutting and sewing aprons to give out to friends as gifts on the December 8th Feast Of The Immaculate Conception.

Through our translator, I told Grandma that I too was a cook. She asked “Any good?” I replied “I like to think so.” She then offered me an apron as a gift. Think I won’t treasure that for a long, long time? I was shooting her during this quiet time, using the ambient light coming through the window…f4/5 at ISO 400…just her working, along side her granddaughter. Tried to key in on the detail…

These were two of my favorites from the whole trip. Maybe they help define my ultimate style a bit – I enjoy the documentation, the photojournalistic aspect of the scene.

And yet…and yet…others have asked about Flo.

Flo the Pig. My little traveling buddy for the past 9 years.

But of course Flo joined me on this trip! Where I go, she goes!

Flo seems to have found a home in the upper compartment of my Lowepro Slingshot, right next to the small travel tripod and the Mag lite. And because the Slingshot goes with me everywhere….Flo does too.

Yes, she slept through the seeing the sites of Paris in October. And she never came out to the Masaya Volcano last week. But believe me, Flo is there. She just picks her spots. Hey, she’s already getting ready for what could potentially be our next big trip together….but that’s over a month away if it even comes together.

Nicaragua was a great experience for me. I met so many interesting people…from our driver Juan Pablo, to our translator David, to the fire chief in Jinotepe. Food was great, colors were even better. I won’t keep inundating you with images from the trip, but if you have five minutes out of your day/evening to spare, have a look at this slide show that I put together. I hope it captures much of what I saw during my time in Central America. It was a great trip and I met some great people….

  1. You cracked me up by starting this post with that big sigh. LOL

I didn’t know you had a traveling partner as I’m still new to your blog. My favorite image is the close-up of her hands, really nice light on them.

  2. Flo on a Honda? Flo deserves a Screaming Eagle 110in, chopped, flame painted, 10 over, raked, Harley, yeah with drag pipes!
Great stuff Mark, the slide show is a great piece and leads us through the people and experience really well.
