Summer Days, Summer Nights
Had one of those impossibly great summer weekends last weekend. Sure, it’s early August, and the air is hanging warm and humid. But this is summer in New Jersey and I’ll take it.
Especially, if I get to go, on Friday night, to the local county fair with Liv, my little Jersey Girl. And then follow that up with a trip to beach with her on Saturday.
Carnivals and fairs are so visually interesting to me. The people, the vendors, the softening evening skies making the lights of the midway shine brighter. From the children, you can feel the excitement of a night out past bedtime, perhaps, eating cotton candy and riding rides. From the teens, you can feel the expectancy of seeing that guy or gal you’ve had your eye on all summer, the warm evening and smell of roasted peanuts acting like an intoxicant. From the parents and the older folks, you can feel that this is just a nice way to take in summer evening.
Had a chance to speak with Frank for a bit. He’s told me he’s been working the amusement circuit for 21 years now. Baseball cap tipped back on his head, gray stubble on his chin, he leaned on a piece of PVC piping that was his make-shift measuring stick. Had to be a certain height to get into his House of Mirrors without an adult. He’s seen a lot of people pass by his eyes in his 21 years…many with three tickets in their hands.
Frank let me shoot his portrait. I liked how it all lined up, he didn’t have to move a muscle. He became #75 in my 100 Strangers project.
The county fair Friday evening, then, on Saturday, a few hours on the beach in Spring Lake. Post beach, tired and hungry from the sun and water, Liv and I drove over to Route 35 in Wall Township, to the 1954-born Circus Drive In for burgers…
The county fair…the beach…the burgers…a summer weekend in New Jersey. All kind of hung together as a visual story for me. Here’s a slideshow…

Carry on, summer…
