Nailpolish and Crayons

Spent some time yesterday with my little girl. It was the first time in a while it was just she and I doing one of our “Daddy Days.”

See, back in the summer, when she still wasn’t really accepting of her younger brother, Chase, I decided to halt the Daddy Days for awhile. Instead, if she and I were planning a day, I told her we had to include her brother. He was part of the family and she had to get used to it.

Not sure if it was because of that strategic parenting council [insert smirk here] or what, but once we started to bring Chase with us…to our days at the park…to stops at the diner…to the local hardware store…her attitude changed. Now they are surprisingly close. And that closeness has already carried over to her the new guy in the house, Matthew.

But yesterday, I thought it would be best if it was just me and Liv again. She’d come with me to the barber shop, then we’d go to a diner for lunch, and then off to a local garden park to knock around a bit.

Just she and I. Like old times.

Now, don’t get the wrong impression. She’s four and half and we let her be four and a half. We don’t believe in piercing the ears or radical haircuts. Not at this age. But she does like to get the finger nails painted now and again. And when some of the other neighbor girls, on a nice afternoon, were getting theirs painted by one of their grandmothers, Liv stood in line and got her’s done.

But she’s not as much in the princesses as she once was. At the top of her Christmas list is a superhero costume. She still likes to get her hands dirty, no matter how painted the nails are.

I shot the above as we waited for our lunch at a local diner. She had settled in, and was coloring on the place mat they had given her. I looked over and saw this, and also saw the opportunity to add to my Little Fingers Gallery Series project. (link will take you to a slideshow of the whole set.)

Yes, she’s growing up, but not too fast.

Just fast enough to stay ahead of her brothers.

And the diner…yeah, we had a good time there too. That’ll always be our special thing.

  1. Nice to see the Little Fingers back again, Mark. I must commend you on your parenting genius. I was wondering how Liv was coping with the new addition and it’s great to see her big sister instincts kick in (with a bit of help). I have a friend whose husband does “Daddy Daughter” days and they become something both of them look forward to. Building memories for the future is a beautiful thing and the pictures are just a bit of icing on the top. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I’ll echo Sabrina’s comment on being glad to see more of the series. She seems to be growing up so fast at least to a set of eyes 3000 miles away. Great images Mark and I hope to see many more both of LIv and the diner stuff.
