It’s amazing what you find just walking down the street in NYC.
Last week, walking towards Penn Station to catch the express train back to Jersey, still a few blocks away, I was wandering around the Garment District.
Strolling down West 39th street, the door to this place was open, so I went in. Not really in the mood to get a bespoke suit – because really, you have to be in just the right mood, no? – I just stood in the doorway and looked around.
The colors. The fabrics. The designs. The styles.
The suit right in front of the shop looked like something Chalky White,on Boardwalk Empire, would wear.
Turns out, that’s because the Neal Boyarsky, the Fabric Czar, HAS outfitted some of the dandiest hoods there ever seen on screen – from Chalky and Nucky Thompson on Boardwalk Empire, all the way back to the Corleone crew in The Godfather movies. Not to mention Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Untouchables, and a whole host of other noted movie characters
Signed movie posters hang in the front windows giving testament to this. Behind the cash registers, autographs and thank-you letters from some of the more sartorially- minded men around – Bill Clinton, Shaq O’Neal, Michael Jordan, Mick Jagger.
Me? I was just a mug from Jersey getting an eyeful. A man’s got to know his limitations. I think window pane plaid suits, silk shirts and peaked lapels are mine.
But it was fun to look at.
