If You’re Gonna Be A Bear, Be A Polar Bear

For the third year running, I had the pleasure of photographing the Sons of Ireland Polar Bear Plunge down in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

It wasn’t the coldest January 1st. In fact, it was sunny and a near-balmy 50ish degrees at the beach. Still, there was a chilly breeze blowing past the Stone Pony and down the boardwalk and it still took some intestinal fortitude to disrobe to your shorts (or bikini) and rush head-long into the cold Atlantic Ocean.

This year was the biggest turnout for the plunge – more than 220 signed up online this year, with another hundred or so people registering in person.

The Sons of Ireland are still working on final numbers, including how much money they raised for the charities that they put on the Plunge for. And I’m still working through all of my images but wanted to share a few here.

Here’s a good recap article from the Asbury Park Press.

I’m working on a multimedia piece for the Sons of Ireland and will share that when it’s done.

  1. Mark,
I was there too and saw you in the water taking these beautiful action shots. Nice work! I have a bunch from the concert inside the convention center that I will post soon.
