Photo A or Photo B?

Time to revisit a topic I throw out there now and again….which do you prefer, Photo A or Photo B?

Photo A:

Photo B:

The setting is the same – the boardwalk in Asbury Park. Seems like every time I head down there, the skies are fantastic. So, I shot this building a few times. Then, the person moved into the frame.

I used Nik Color eFex>Tonal Contrasts to make the color one pop a bit more. Nik Silver for the B&W conversion.

Personally, I think the color version is nice (I’m sure the HDR experts could juice the scene up) but I think I like the B&W version even better.

How about you? Let me know in the comments…

  1. I think the B&W conversion works better for this scene. With the taco stand being shuttered, the steel tube frame missing it’s covering and the dead looking grass, it has a depressed, dilapidated look that is better in black and white.

In the color version, there just isn’t enough bright color or points of interest to make it more than a snapshot, but in B&W it has nice, documentary feel to it.

  2. I know you’d expect me to say the B&W but I think color works best for this shot. The man becomes lost in the B&W but his red coat stands out in the color one.

I would, however, try cropping the color one to remove the red restroom trailer on the right. If you do that I think you’re eye will instantly be drawn to the center as his coat is the only red in the image. You’d also have a simple red, white and blue theme then.

    My 2 cents.

  3. Photo A for me for much the same reasons Mark mentioned above. I lose the man in the BW. I also think a crop would help the image. It certainly would position the man as the only red in the photo, but it would also help to enlarge the hole scene and call attention to the blue sky/red coat color compliment.

  4. Photo A. The sky looks better in Photo B but it causes me to pull my eyes away from the man and shuttered stand.
