Summer Comes Again
The start of summer – unofficially via calendar but official in my eyes – is upon us.
Tradition the last few years has been for the block we live on is to have a BBQ/party in the alley that separates the houses.
We’ve done this a few times, getting a chance to catch up with neighbors that we’re only starting to regularly see again after a long, closed-in winter.
We set up orange safety cones at each end of the aley, and give the kids free reign on their bikes, scooters and push carts.
It was muggy and warm and that chance of thunderstorm became realized about an hour in. No matter. Take shelter in one of the garages while the kids enjoyed romping in the puddles.
The kids are getting bigger – amazing how that happens. Three or four new additions to the whole group, too.
It was bittersweet this year. Since the trucks will be pulling up next week to get us moved to our new house, this’ll be our last alley BBQ.
Also, too, the kids are starting to head to different schools, the golfers and non-golfers are starting to separate.
It is what it is, the passage of time. But for one last evening, we ate pulled pork and steamed crabs and clams and watermelon and cake. We sipped on Hurricanes and drank ice cold beers.
Summer came again…and we saw life passing before our eyes.
I had to shoot it.
May the wind always be at your back, may the sun always be on your face...
