Doing The Roadwork
Because I just don’t have enought things to do….and because I needed just another piece of online presence….There’s a new entry into the JSP world.
I’ve created a Tumblr account called Doing The Roadwork.
Sam Abell has a book called The Photographic Life. The title comes from what he did. He always had a camera with him, he was always taking photos. It’s what he did. It’s how he got better.
It makes sense.
The other day, I was out for a run through the streets of New Brunswick. I ran past a group of men standing outside a liquor store. One of them them said to me as I was passing….My man! Doing the roadwork!
That stuck with me for the rest of the run.
It dawned on me that all the photos I take during the week…during the year…some of which get printed, some which you see here on this blog, some of which make my Flickr page…and some that just sit on my hard drive because there’s no real place for them – it’s all doing the roadwork of my photographic passion.
I’m a firm beleiver in that to be better at something, you have to get out and do it. And do it. And do it.
You can’t sit and just read about it. You can’t sit and just theorize about it. You can’t just sit and think about it. Well, you could….but none of this will make you better at whatever that “it” is.
You have to getout and do it. Sometimes it’ll be good. Sometimes it won’t be. But it will all contribute to the end goal.
I’m doing those runs now to get in better shape, lose some weight. I wasn’t out of shape, really, but I could stand to lose a few pounds. Plus, my wife has been doing a great job with her workouts as she gets ready first for a 5K run, and then a thing called the Rugged Maniac in July.
She’s been very inspiring, eating great, losing weight. So, starting this past March 1, I locked it all down as well. Eating better, more intense workouts, running more.
Doing the roadwork.
It’s been good for both of us. She’s in great shape and will be ready for her races. I’ve lost almost 15 pounds and feel great too (the kids still tire me out by the end of the day but that’s another story…)
Doing the roadwork.
No matter if it’s your fitness, your faith or your passion, you have to put in the time.
So, what does this have to do with my new Tumblr page?
Just that it’s another way to chart my progress and show some work. Getting it off the hard drives and out into the open in a new way.
Trying to get better.
So if you’re on Tumblr, or follow some photographic Tumblr accounts (and there are some good ones out there from National Geographic, Joe McNally, Corbis) check mine out, and tumble along.
And just keep doing the roadwork.
