Weekend Shot: Granny’s Hands

Sometimes, weekends actually feel like they don’t slid by to quickly, that you do get the things done that you want to, see the people that you were hoping to, and have some fun to boot.

This was one of those weekends. Friday afternoon it started, when I attended a little “pre-kindergarden graduation” event. The kids, Olivia included, sang some songs that they had learned, then presented the book they had “wrote.” The rest of the weekend was spent doing various chores, seeing friends, grilling out, doing more work around the house, sipping some beers. It was a great early-summer weekend.

Too, my wife’s aunt and grandmother from Florida have been visiting. Adele -Granny to everyone – is 90 now, a spry gal, quick with her wit. Though Les and Olivia had visited her at the beginning of May, it was good to see her again even so soon after. Aunt Sue and Granny visit NJ only once a year, and yesterday, they stopped by our house, along with the rest of Leslie’s family. So in all, what with all the adults, kids, grandkids, we had 15 people over for a BBQ yesterday.

In the midst of all the craziness, I wanted a quiet moment with Adele. So I asked her if she could come sit in our main room with the nice natural light. I made some portraits of just her – a quiet time in the midst of it all. As I usually like to do, I went from wide to detailed. I wanted a shot of her hands. I always notice she has the same rings on whenever I see her. And, at 90, those hands have been through a lot.

Eventually, I pulled everyone into the shot. Like I said, they only come once a year, and at Adele’s age, we never know when the travel may get to be too much. I’ve often said there are the shots we want to take, and then there are the shots we HAVE to take. Don’t get fancy, just get it done.
