Weekend Shot: Got My Goose
Every weekend, invariably, I end up at this lake the middle of Allentown, NJ, with the kids. The old mill building is right there, and there’s a little stone parking lot type of area.
We usually go there on Saturday mornings. Sometimes again Sunday evening. Within this area live some geese and ducks. Fish in the lake (though no fishing allowed). And now we’re seeing turtles as well. The kids don’t ask to go to the lake…they ask “Can we go to the duckies?” And they ask with such excitement you’d think they were asking to go to an amusement park.
I usually say yes. It’s close to the house, something kids like to do, we’re outside and, best of all, it’s free.
Seems like no matter how many times I’ve been there, I can always find something to photograph. Either the light is different, expressing something to me. Or the kids are in an especially playful mood. Even if there aren’t a lot of photo “keepers” on these jaunts, I shoot something to try something out later on.
Like this one. Usually the ducks and geese are swimming around the lake. Saturday, many of them were sitting on the shoreline. While the light was hard (it was around 11 a.m.), I thought I could get an interesting portrait of this one goose, and convert it to B&W.
Goose Noir, if you will.
Next week when we go, I’m sure I’ll find something else to shoot.
