Happy Birthday, America!

Happy Birthday, America!

Ten years ago on this date, my wife and I were in the middle of driving back to New Jersey from San Francisco.

We had stopped and saw the redwoods in Northern California, some of the rocky Oregon coast, and spent a couple of days in Seattle. Then, unfortunately, as we huge the big right in Seattle to come East, the rain followed us or much of the time until Chicago.

In my trusty Honda Civic, we drove through much of Montana under threatening skies. Sometimes it did more than threaten. At one point, though, we chased a beautiful rainbow in Montana. I was shooting with a Canon A80 point-and-shoot digital camera then, and grabbed this shot. Used 2014 processing to punch it up a bit.

Eventually, we made it back to the great State of New Jersey. Soon after, I’d start working at one of the Johnson & Johnson operating companies, so that 10 year anniversary is coming up soon as well.

Here in New Jersey, we live in Allentown, which is called the “Crossroads Of The Revolution.” American and British troops trooped all over the place around us. We live near both the sites of the Battle of Monmouth and the Battles in Princeton and Trenton. In Titusville, NJ, I run a trail called Colonial Lane, which has a big marker saying General Washington and troops hiked down it on his way to Trenton way back when.

It’s a great area to live in, and I know when my kids get older, we’ll be talking a lot about what happened in the area where we live.

I don’t shoot fireworks, I leave that to the pros. But here’s a short video I did a few years ago, kinda gets you in the spirit of the 4th.

So, whether your here in the United States, and will celebrate this day with fireworks and hot dogs, or if you’re someplace else in the world and it’s just another day, make the most of it. And be happy for whatever you have.
