Color, Texture, Pattern Tells The Story

Not far from the house, just off Main Street in Allentown, NJ, is an old grist mill. Built in 1706, it has withstood the test of time – somewhat – going through various incantations, owners and businesses.

Recently, it’s housed a restaurant and some craft shops. However, first Hurricane Irene, and then Hurricane Sandy have caused these shops to fall on hard times. The restaurant never opened again, and just in the past few weeks, FOR RENT signs have crept up in the windows of the craft shops.

Still, it’s a weekly destination spot for me and the kids. Well, not the mill itself but the lake next to it, and the structures behind it. The kids go to throw rocks in the lake; I go with the camera seeking out color, texture and pattern.

I like to shoot entire-to-detail. Show everything. Then show specifics.

Rusty, crusty artifacts: Sometimes that’s the way to tell the story too.
