Memorial Day 2015

“On the ground dog tags and wreaths of flowers, with the ribbons red as the blood
Red as the blood you spilled in the Central Highlands mud
Limousines rush down Pennsylvania Avenue, rustling the leaves as they fall
And apology and forgiveness got no place here at all, here at The Wall….”
~ Bruce Springsteen, The Wall.

Today marks the unofficial start of summer…to most people.

To me, it marks two things:

1) A day to remember all the men…like my Dad and my father-in-law….and women who served our country in times of war and peace. They’ved helped make the United States the greatest country in the world.

2) The official start of Summer. Yes, when I’m King of The World, I’m making Memorial Day the official start of summer, summer solstice be damned.

We’ll be marching in the hometown parade today, grilling some sausage and spending time with some friends. Here’s to a great summer, everyone.

And here’s to remembering what today is all about.

  1. I have also been thinking about “The Wall” today, as I remember the men and women who died in the Vietnam War. The song is also a reminder of those who didn’t get their shot at rock and roll stardom because the “wise men were all fools” when they initiated a war that could never be won. Walter Cichon and Bart Haynes deserved their chance to be successful musicians as much as Bruce.

    • Very true point, Paul. The hands Fate dealt are odd. I’m sure many a Jersey Shore musician suffered the fates of Walter and Bart, denying them the aspects of Bruce’s life. I’d like to think Bruce knows that as well, and plays these songs for them. Thanks for your comment, Paul.
