All In Again: Photo Place Gallery

Chor Bazaar, Mumbai, India
“One of the things that I most believe in is the compose and wait philosophy of photography. It’s a very satisfying, almost spiritual way to photograph. Life isn’t’ knocking you around, life isn’t controlling you. You have picked your place, you’ve picked your scene, you’ve picked your light, you’ve done all the decision making and you are waiting for the moment to come to you….”
I guess I’m ending this year much like I started it: Submitting some work to Photo Place Gallery for review and possible inclusion.
The title of this exhibit, co-hosted by Photo Place Gallery and Texas Photographic Society, is Composed. Unlike most Photo Place Gallery exhibits, this one actually has a cash prize for the top three juror selections.
“Compose…and wait.”
~ Sam Abell
I’m submitting some images, like the one above that I shot in Chor Bazaar in Mumbai, India, and the one below, because of who the juror is – Sam Abell, one of my favorite photographers of all time.
Sure, winning some money would be nice. But to have Sam look at a few of my photos, and possibly consider them, that’s both exciting… and scary.

I’ve had mixed success submitting to Photo Place Gallery this year. I had one image included in the their Photo Noir photo book earlier this year, which was nice.
Then, I had an image included in their physical gallery in Vermont, for their Black & White exhibit in Vermont, which was VERY nice.
However, I whiffed on the five images I submitted for the Dusk To Dawn call-to-exhibit.
So, I guess we’ll see how I do with the four images I submit for this call for entry. I have to say, it’s a bit intimidating to think someone of Sam’s stature will be seeing my images, and judging them.
I don’t know what would be worse…a negative reaction or no reaction (see: 1 hour 20 minute mark of THIS video.)
“A mad, keen photographer needs to get out into the world and work and make mistakes.”
~ Sam Abell
Anyway…fedora is in the ring again. We shall see.
