BTS Sunday With David Burnett

May 2013, New Brunswick New Jersey
Has it really been four years since I had David Burnett up on a ladder doing portraits of a the Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky?
Indeed it has been.
The said ladder is in the photo above. He’s not up on it now. I think I was holding it when he was.
But you can see his Speed Graphix camera up on the tripod. Though David is behind his Canon at the moment.
We were on J&J’s campus. David is standing on the stone base on which sits the DRAPED RECLINING MOTHER AND CHILD bronze sculpture by Henry Moore.
David was shooting in B&W and in color. We were working on better executive portraits than executives normally get. They were for Alex’s personal space, not really for publication anywhere.
Later, I had 16×24 prints made of them, and had them framed in black frames.
Alex loved them.
I shot this with a little Canon S120 using the fake tilt/shift mode. Probably not the best function for this shot. But it is what it is.
David was in my thoughts recently. I came across this photo and posted it to my Facebook page.
David pinged me, happy with the memory. He mentioned he was on his was to The Outsiders cast reunion.
I remember him telling me this story during dinner one evening. I half forgot it though, in between all the other fantastic stories.
What a photographer. What a career.
I’ve never read The Outsiders. But I recently picked it up for 50 cents at our library sale stall.
Starting it tonight.
