BTS Sunday: Danny Shoots Frank
An auspicious anniversary this weekend.
On June 2, 1978, Springsteen’s Darkness On The Edge of Town was released.
You can read all you want about the fourth studio album from Bruce and the E Street band.
But for our BTS purposes here at JerseyStyle…let’s look at this photo.
Why? Because it includes one of the main participants in that album: Frank Stefanko, he in the top coat and scarf in the image above.
Frank shot the memorable Darkness album cover, right in his home in Haddonfield, New Jersey.
The album cover that featured a haunted and tousle-hair Springsteen, jacket open like James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause to show a white v-neck t-shirt, in front of some a back door covered with Venetian blinds and next to some non-descript suburban wallpaper.
Bruce told Frank, after seeing the shots:”That’s the person that I’m writing about. That’s the person that is the Darkness on the Edge of Town character and that’s what I want on my cover.”
Frankly, I think it’s this guy that looks like he has a meeting across the river in a few hours.
Frank is a still a New Jersey guy, and small state that it is (not!), I’ve bumped into him a few times around the way.
I shot the image above back in March 2017, after a panel discussion in Princeton. That’s Danny Clinch doing the shooting with his Leica. We were walking up Nassau Street in Princeton to an after-panel event. The air was crisp but the light was soft and sweet. I knew Danny wanted to capture it so why not use Frank as the subject.
To be honest, I think he started with his iPhone, then moved to the Leica.
Me, I was fumbling with my Fujix X100T, trying to capture the moment before it…and the two great lensmen…moved on.
I’ve yet to see the portraits Danny made of Frank here. Maybe some day.
But I’m glad I got the BTS!
