Mental illness is one of the leading healthcare challenges of our time. Negative stigmas and cultural perceptions leave many without access to necessary care. The World Health Organization established October 10 as World Mental Health Day in 1992 to educate and build awareness about global mental health and to rally advocates against social stigma.

Last year, I met and worked on a story with Michelle Hammer, an artist, podcaster, entrepreneur  and social activist from Queens.

She also has schizophrenia.

Her goal is to raise awareness about mental health and erase the stigma associated with it. She doing this through her art and clothing line.

As today is World Mental Health Day, I thought it would be a good day to re-surface her story.

Watch her story here. Follow her on Instagram.

And read more about my day with her here.

(Those are my photos of her on her About page, too!)
